"In a 'more is more' kind of way the project was unapologetically populist; brimming with references and signs easily accessible to both architects and the general public. 'Community Hall' entertained and delighted in creating an inclusive space with an ambiguous threshold between art, architecture and popular culture"

Architect Victoria

Awards Edition

"This is a heroic building within the locale of the Docklands occupying a corner site and offering a highly considered and resolved mix of apartment types and shared spaces. The vibrant and numerous apartment configurations demonstrate a commitment to the project's ambition. Its central atrium at ground level podium creates sheer delight through its sculptural manipulation of interior surfaces, acting to anchor the building and provide a backdrop to shared, public and entry lobbies"

Architect Victoria

"This is more than just a school, offering the local community a range of facilities that bind parents, children and staff in a civic and social enterprise which has succeeded against great odds. This project demonstrates the potential of architecture to empower a community and allow them to imagine a better future"

"Bursting through the National Gallery of Victoria's much-loved water wall, a new multi-coloured ''community hall'' is designed to reflect the variety of multicultural Melbourne. McBride Charles Ryan set the hall within the bluestone brutalism of the National Gallery of Victoria's giant geometry of rectangles, right angles, and semi-circles. The design mirrors the archway above like a fallen shadow, yet creates a wonderfully playful juxtaposition through the use of colour."
